Writing the Big Idea Book: Three Big Ideas



Big-idea books like Drive, The Tipping Point, Outliers, The One Thing and even the latest one I read called Known, by Mark Schaeffer, are all books that have done exceptionally well because they pull a big crowd of readers. Why? Their ideas are fresh, compelling, and, most of all, backed up with both great research and great stories. When you are writing a book, the title must carry that almost magical punch.

Let’s say, for example, you want to write a big-idea book on leadership. Here are some book ideas you could start with and possible titles:

  • The Reluctant LeaderThe strength of this title would be that it taps into the pain points of those who are fed up with the traditional “ladder climbing” process to get ahead. Your angle as the author of this title could be that you will show non-traditional, career paths that others have taken that resulted in more satisfying and even more lucrative careers.Another approach could be changing the title to Reluctant Leaders where the book focuses on the path many millennials are now taking that does not conform to the career path of their elders.
  • Standing at the Edge of Success: This book could be about those who fear success. It could offer a unique twist on traditional career books. Here, you could interview people who avoided leadership positions because they feared success, and, as a result, now have many regrets. Then you could share strategies and tactics readers could use to avoid this pitfall.
  • Zigzagging: I was going to write a book with this title. So far, as of this post, no one has written a book with this name. Grab it while you can! Here, your focus could be on the changing job landscape where people are making job and even career changes more often than ever before. There are plenty of great stories out there about twenty-year-olds who have changed jobs, even up to five times, before they turn thirty.

There are many more interesting book ideas out there than you might realize.
