Fun Fact: Griffith has the double F and T in her name, which sets her apart from all other art gallery directors.
Three Questions
- What made you want to get into this area in your career? “I have wanted to work in a gallery at some capacity since I was 13. My parents took me on a trip to France with them, and while we were there, we visited a lot of small art galleries and grand museums. Still, I fell in love with the smaller spaces, what was happening with them, and hearing my parents talk to the directors and some artists. That made me think this is what I wanted to do for a career.”
- How many galleries are in Charleston currently? “I am grateful to work with all of the wonderful galleries within the Charleston Gallery Association as the vice president of the board. We have over 40 galleries in the association and 20+ other galleries in the greater Charleston area. I would say we have close to 100 galleries in all of Charleston. There is a lot of art to see here, for sure.”
- Tell us about the fantastic First Friday art walks you’re known for in Charleston. “On the first Friday of each month, all of the galleries in the Charleston Galleries Association, particularly in the downtown area, stay open from 5 to 8. We typically will do a show opening or have artists, demos, or artist talks so that locals and tourists alike can visit and experience the art gallery after dark and from a different perspective than just coming in during the day and seeing the work. It’s a great chance to meet artists, plan your trip around when your specific artist will be showing, and introduce yourself to something new.”
