How to Sign Up for Amazon KDP: A Complete Guide
Start your self-publishing journey with this step-by-step guide to creating your Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) account.
If you are ready to get your book out into the world, Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is one of the most powerful tools available. It allows you to self-publish eBooks, paperbacks, and hardcovers for free and reach millions of readers worldwide.
Below is a simple walk-through of exactly how to set up your account so you can start publishing today.
Before You Start: Gather Your Information
To keep the process smooth, have the following information ready before you log in. You will need these to get paid and comply with tax regulations:
Active Email Address: You can use your existing Amazon customer account email or a new one.
Phone Number: Required for Two-Step Verification (security).
Bank Account Information: Account number and routing number (for direct deposit royalties).
Tax ID: Social Security Number (SSN) for individuals in the U.S., or an EIN/TIN for businesses and non-U.S. residents.
Step 1: Go to the KDP Website
Navigate to https://kdp.amazon.com.
Step 2: Sign In or Create an Account
You have two options on the homepage:
Use an Existing Amazon Account: If you already buy products on Amazon, you can use that same login. This is often easier as it links your accounts. Click “Sign in.”
Create a New Account: If you want to keep your publishing business completely separate from your personal shopping, click “Sign up” and then “Create your KDP account.”
Step 3: Secure Your Account
Amazon takes security seriously. You will likely be asked to set up Two-Step Verification.
Enter your mobile phone number.
Amazon will text you a One-Time Password (OTP).
Enter the code on the screen to verify your device.
Step 4: Enter Author & Publisher Information
Once logged in, you will see a notification at the top of your dashboard saying your account information is incomplete. Click the link that says “Update Now” (or go to the “Your Account” link at the top right).
Business Type: Select “Individual” (most common for solo authors) or “Corporation” (if you have an LLC or company).
Date of Birth / Country: Enter your personal details.
Legal Name: Crucial Note: This must be your legal name (the one on your tax returns and bank account), NOT your pen name. You can choose a pen name later when you actually upload your book.
Address: Enter your mailing address.
Step 5: Set Up Payment (Getting Paid)
Scroll down to the “Getting Paid” section.
Click “Add a Bank Account.”
Select your country and enter your bank account and routing numbers.
This sets you up for Direct Deposit, which is the fastest way to receive your royalties. (If you don’t add a bank account, you may have to wait for paper checks, which have a minimum payment threshold).
Step 6: The Tax Interview
This sounds intimidating, but it is just a digital form.
Scroll to the “Tax Information” section and click “Complete Tax Information.”
Answer the questions regarding your citizenship and tax classification.
Enter your Tax ID (SSN, EIN, or foreign tax ID).
Digitally sign the form and submit it.
Step 7: Finish and Save
Once all three sections (Profile, Payment, Tax) are green and marked as “Complete,” click “Save” at the bottom of the page.
You Are Ready to Publish!
You will be redirected to your Bookshelf. This is your main hub where you will see a big button that says “+ Create”. Whenever you are ready to upload your manuscript and cover, that is where you will start.
Good luck with your first book!
