Position Yourself as an Expert with Blogging

There is an interesting tactic that Internet marketers use that you can use yourself to increase your profile while you blog. It doesn’t matter what the topic area is; it doesn’t matter if you’re relatively inexperienced. You can gain experience while positioning yourself as an authority if you use this method.
Let’s back up and understand what Internet marketers are. First and foremost, they are sales and marketing professionals (even if they don’t realize that). The job of an Internet marketer is to find ways to reach an audience (through ads, an email list, etc.) and then pitch that audience something for sale. When members of the audience buy, they “convert.” The better the marketing, the better the sales pitch, then the better the conversion rate.
If that sounds familiar, it should, because you are an Internet marketer. You are trying to reach your audience and sell them your work. Your blog is a tool for reaching that audience (and expanding it). This means that any method an Internet marketer can use, you can use as well.
Specifically, Internet marketers often choose to become experts on a given topic. It takes a long time, however, to gain expertise organically. The bar for being a legitimate “expert” can be pretty high, and if you need to accomplish your goal relatively quickly, you need to find a way to learn faster… or gain attention for your expertise some other way. This “other way” is by association.
There are multiple Internet marketers who use this “expertise by association” method… and no, it’s not dishonest. Sure, you could use the method dishonestly, but you don’t have to. Instead, if you are honest about who you are and your own level of expertise, but you use that relative level of expertise to ask questions of the “real” experts, your constant association with those experts (whatever the field is that you’re exploring) will eventually put you in their company in people’s minds. They’ll see you as part of that group because people naturally group together individuals who associate with others consistently.
Never become so much of an expert that you stop gaining expertise. View life as a continuous learning experience. – Denis Waitley
So, if you want to be known among, say, horror authors, start interviewing horror authors. Draw people in with those interviews. Soon, you’ll be associated with the people you interview. This will happen over time and organically, completely honestly, but it will happen because you chose to create that association and then repeat it.
Blogging is a great way to interview or otherwise interact with authorities in order to place yourself in their proximity. Spend time with authorities and eventually people will become accustomed to seeing you among their number. Your blog can be the tool that accomplishes this… and in that way, you can make yourself an expert in virtually any topic by spending time with other experts.
Just remember to have fun with it. Nobody likes a grumpy expert!
