Blog and You’ll Never Be Bored Again

Blog And You’ll Never Be Bored Again

Have you ever met a truly busy person? Do you remember when you first encountered a busy person? A writer friend of mine told me a story about when he was in college. It was there, he said, that he met his first truly busy person. He thought it odd that this girl, a junior at the college, had so many things going on that she had to use a schedule book. She would have to schedule time to hang out with friends and do other activities.

“It struck me as so weird,” he told me. At the time, I remember thinking, ‘This isn’t normal. Nobody is that busy.’ But of course, years later, I would realize… that’s not true at all.”

In fact, most people who write eventually become one of those “busy people,” because being productive can be addictive. The more you write, and especially the more “into” a given piece of writing you become, the more you will find excuses to spend time writing. Soon, you will realize that you have to schedule time in your life because large blocks of your time are spent being a productive author.

“Boredom is the only real tragedy for a writer; everything else is material.” – Andrew Sean Greer

This is a thrilling experience! The same author friend told me of the best thing he has ever written, a fiction novel that revolves around family relationships. He told me that he used to stay up until three and four in the morning simply because he wanted to be writing the book. When he was done, he was afraid he’d never write anything that he liked as much as that book, because he was so pleased with it.

What people who have experienced this have in common is that they are never bored. When you blog, when you focus on honing the craft of writing, when you reflect on why you write what and how you write, you will find that the hours slip away. There is no reason ever to find yourself “at loose ends.” There is no reason ever to be bored, restless, or feel like you “should be doing something.”

This is the gift of writing. Blogging helps bring that gift to fruition. The next time you find yourself wondering what you should do with your time, before you put on a movie and mindless kill some hours, consider spending some time in front of your computer or typewriter. Instead, brew or pour your favorite beverage, sit down with your blog, and put some words on the page.

You might be surprised just how easily you are transported to a different realm, a realm in which boredom does not exist and there is no such thing as “killing time.” Instead, you are spending time, willfully and productively… and while enjoying every minute of it.

Just a thought.
