Smart Book Launches – Part 1 – Creating Reader Momentum

Ready to launch your new book but don’t know where to start? Here are some tips to give you what I call a “Smart Book Launch.”

  •  Start with just one champion. I know. This is counterintuitive, but this will help you focus on building out your team. Once you find just one champion you can share your vision for your launch with him or her, get feedback that will help you introduce your launch to others, and develop a clearer plan for you to have a successful launch.
  • Find your next champion. There is a great video about “the first follower”  by Derek Sivers. This person makes ALL the difference in taking you, considered the “courageous leader,” to that next level of awareness and up through to recognition by others that they want to also be involved. This momentum from awareness to recognition creates the groundswell–the movement to embrace what you want to share, which, in this case, is your book.

  • Hold an event. Once you have two people, you can build up through them to a number of champions to help you create an event that will have the level of energy that will keep growing. There are a number of stats out there that say you are more than five times more effective face-to-face than you would be online. Use this fact to create a live event to grow your momentum, but also don’t stop there. Also, use tools like Zoom and/or Facebook Live to create book marketing events. When I worked as one of Seth Godin’s Domino Project Street Team members when he was working to “reinvent publishing,” I independently ran something I called “Biggest Book Club in the World” book launches through webinars. They added to the momentum of the book launches for several of Seth’s released books by others that year.
  • Create Video. I’m a big fan of a tool called Content Samurai. (Note: this is NOT an affiliate code.) It really works well to help you create content that stands out. Here, create a chapter-by-chapter video. The combination of the video and your voice will help engage readers, pulling them into your book in the spirit of growing reader momentum. Research here shows that video has a 10X return over just print, so this should definitely be something you should implement if possible.Want More? Here’s a recent video I put together on book launches:
