Book Writing Fears And How To Overcome Them

Are you afraid of writing your book? If you are shaking your head “yes,” then you are not alone.

I won’t be disclosing the names of my clients who have, again and again, shared their many fears around writing their books. Here are just a few of the issues they have shared that include:

  • fear of not having enough to say.
  • fear of writing content that is not accurate.
  • fear of writing something that doesn’t sell.
  • fear of ridicule about the quality of your book.

And the list goes on and on. So what can you or should you do to overcome any fears you might have? Here are three suggestions:

  1. Get someone who knows what they are doing to help you. I am not saying you have to pay someone to help you, but you should get someone who either has written a book before, even if it’s a good friend, to help you move through the roadblocks almost all new writers experience.
  2. Find resources (like this blog :)) that will help you learn all the significant things you should know to write, publish, launch and market your book.  These resources can also provide you with lots of real-life stories with insights that come from years of helping hundreds of authors write their books. Besides insights I have, you can regularly find insights from authors like Michael Hyatt, Chris Brogan, Derek Halpern, and Mark Schaeffer.
  3. Read the books of those in your field you want to emulate . . . but do more than just read their books. What I mean by this is to read their book, first, for understanding, and then, again, for how they wrote what they wrote. For example, did they have oodles of research that permeates each page? Or do they pepper their book chapters with powerful, illuminating stories that help readers really grasp the insights they share? Or perhaps they offer new and disruptive thinking?

When it’s time for you to stop being afraid to write your book you’ll know it. Most importantly, know that time will come”. –Anonymous
