“From Hodgkins Survivor To Adventurer: The Incredible Journey Of Graham Through Eight Countries”

What do you do when you accomplish a major obstacle in life? If you are extremely creative, you choose something like riding 3600 miles to Panama City.

How does this entry connect to books and social media? Graham’s journey was such a rare blend of great stories coupled with powerful social media. Now Graham says he will not write a book about his adventures . . . so I decided to showcase his story to, at the very least, help you. If you are, for any reason, down or just uninspired, take a peek at this site.

I’m Graham’s mom, and as a mother of a son who went through Hodgkins and then rode his bike all by himself through eight countries, I spent six weeks, hour after hour, wondering where he was. I did not rest until he returned to Chicago, where he started.

I still can’t believe Graham took that journey. Every time I think about it I feel like I just was lifted up in the air as if I were in a hot air balloon. It lifts me up from my everyday worries. It buoys me up when I get aches or pains for any reason. It shows me that I can do more than I ever thought possible because I still can’t believe Graham rode by himself all that way!

He rode from 8 a.m. or so to 3 p.m. daily. He rode through rain and heat and wind and traffic. He road down unpaved roads. He also rode down highways. One of my favorite stories he tells is how he would stop for lunch in remote areas. He would kick open the door of the rundown roadside restaurant, and people would ask how he got there. When he told them he rode his bike, people would say, “No. Really. How did you get here.” He again would say, “I rode my bike here.” When they looked outside and saw he was telling the truth, as they saw no car in sight, only his dusty bike, they would gasp. Then . . . they bought him lunch! What are you waiting for? What do you wish you could do but have not taken that first step yet? This is your year.
