9 Creative Writing Prompts For Adults

Are you struggling to start a story? Then here are some creative writing prompts for adults that may be able to help you get that creative process started.

#1. The Dark Room

The door which is usually open is now closed. You open the door and see that there is a dark room there waiting for you. A rattling noise can be heard at the back end of the room. There shouldn’t be anything in there, so what could have made that sound? You take a step forward. What is waiting in there?

#2. Road Rage

You’re driving in your vehicle when a car cuts you off. You slam on your brakes to avoid the accident. You yell out loud in frustration as the seat belt cuts into your chest. The driver who just cut you off sees this in their rearview mirror and stops their car. They fling their door open and come angrily toward you. What happens next?

#3. Treasure on the Trail

You’ve decided to take a hike for the first time in years. With a pack on your backfilled with water and lunch, you hit the trail with your best friend. Maybe a mile into walking, you notice something shiny just off of the trail and decide to investigate. What is this object that you found? Why is it there? And could it be some sort of treasure with value?

#4. The Surprise Email

The alarm clock sounds at 6:30 am. You groan and turn it off. It’s another day of the same old routine. You brush your teeth, eat some breakfast, and watch CNN for a few minutes as the coffee begins to work. Then you sit down at your computer to begin to write. Just as you start, you receive an email notification. It’s from an old friend who you haven’t seen in 20 years and they want to meet at your front door in 5 minutes. What do you do?

#5. The Proposition

You and your spouse are at the grocery store, buying your weekly supplies. Your spouse realizes that you both walked past the milk, so they go back to pick up a gallon. At that moment, another person appears and whispers in your ear that they’d like to take you outside and fulfill all of your intimate desires. A hand is placed in a very private location. Then your spouse returns with the milk and sees this happening. What do you do?

#6. More Than Just Cookies

There’s a banging on your front door. You take a quick peek outside to see a group of Girl Scouts out there holding boxes of cookies. Since you don’t want to buy any, you decide to ignore the knocking. Except it doesn’t stop. “We know you are home!” you hear from the porch. “Open this door now or we’ll let loose what is in our boxes and you’ll regret it.” What kind of evil is lurking in those boxes of what you thought were cookies?

#7. The Radio Threat

You’re driving along in your car, singing along to the radio. The song ends, you hit the last note, and are feeling pretty good. Then a crackly voice comes over the airwaves. It says your name and that you need to pay attention. “In 5 minutes, you will be dead unless you do something for me.” What is it that the voice wants you to do? Are you going to take the threat seriously? Then what happens next?

#8. Waking Up

Feeling exhausted, you drop into bed and immediately fall asleep. You have a strange dream where you’re fighting in a battle. Bombs are dropping everywhere. There’s a tattoo on your shoulder that you don’t recognize. Then someone comes up to you, offering you some emergency rations. “Good job out there today,” you’re told. So you have a bite to eat, drift off to sleep… and wake up in the world of your dream. What are you going to do next?

#9. Lost and Found

Your dog escapes on you through the front door. He tears off down the street with you close on its heels. After a few blocks, you just can’t keep up, so you return home. By the time you get there, your dog is already waiting for you. His tail is wagging, but you notice that there are red paw prints leading up to your porch. Then you notice the dangling arm in the dog’s mouth. What happens next?
