7 Ideas For Writing A Fiction Book

Writing fiction is something that most writers want to tackle at some point in their life. Creating your own characters within your own world is a very personal, yet entertaining experience that can then be conveyed to the reader. The only problem is that it can be difficult to come up with a great idea that you can write a fictional book around.

If you’re struggling to find some ideas for starting a fiction book, the first place to look is at your own life. The easiest stories to compose as a writer come from your personal experiences. Think about the stories you have from work, your family, or an encounter you had with a stranger. What makes that story stand out in your mind? How did that event affect you? Have you learned something from that experience? The answers to those questions can become the foundation of great fictional work.

Here are some more ideas for writing a fiction book to help you get started with the creative process.

#1. What is your vision of a perfect world?

If you could design your own world, what would it look like? How inclusive would it be? What would the outcomes be for the various decisions your characters be based on the type of world you design? When creating a perfect world for your story, it doesn’t have to actually be perfect. Just look at some of the stories offered by George Orwell – dystopian worlds can be just as perfect as a world where hunger and poverty have been eliminated.

#2. What is your worst-case scenario?

Fictional stories need to be larger than life in order to be entertaining. For this reason, take one of your characters and have the worst thing possible happen to them. Be as descriptive as possible for this event. Then have your character begin to work out of this scenario, step by step, as you work to advance the plot of your story. Doing this will inspire your readers to do the same things when they encounter their own stressful situations.

#3. Where would you like to go?

Sometimes writing a fiction book is less about what we know as writers and more about where we’d like to go. If you’ve always wanted to visit Tuscany, then set your story there. Your passions as a writer are just as important as your experiences. You may not have personal details that can be included in a story like this, but the emotions that your words will contain will more than makeup for that.

#4. Who did you want to be when you grew up?

Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs in our direction. Many of us wanted to have a larger than life job when we grew up: astronauts, firefighters, doctors, veterinarians… the list goes on and on. Yet as we grow up, life sometimes dictates that we go in a different direction. Talk about those initial dreams, the challenges to stay the course, or the rewards that happened when you chose a different path.

#5. Who is the most interesting person you have ever met?

Now you can’t say “the reflection in the mirror” as the answer to this question. Think about the one person you’ve met over the years that has left a lasting impression on you. It doesn’t even need to be a close friend or family member. It can even be a celebrity. Now imagine what their life is like. Start writing a story about what you picture their daily routines happen to be and the people this person might meet throughout the day.

#6. Where do you want to be in 10 years?

It’s a common job interview question, but it can also be a great idea for writing a fictional story. Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now? Did you picture yourself in the position you’re currently in 10 years ago? Sometimes the best fictional stories are more about the mistakes made and lessons learned rather than following a life lived to ideal perfection.

#7. What did you dream about last night?

Dreams are often the foundation of great fictional work. This is because our minds create very realistic worlds and stories for us to enjoy while we sleep. Try keeping a dream journal to encourage remembering these dreams in the future so you can write about them.
