Secondary and Tertiary Business Networking Circles

Secondary And Tertiary Business Networking Circles

Additional points to remember with your Secondary Circle:

  • Add names to this group that you may have originally considered for your primary circle, but then omitted.
  • This group doesn’t have to be limited to 10, so there’s more margin for error.
  • Your secondary circle is a prime place to fill in any gaps in your primary circle. Add diversity that you may be missing in your primary circle to this group. This could mean skills, age, sex, ethnicity, etc.
  • It’s possible that those who you initially thought would be ideal Networlders for your primary circle may no longer be a good fit for any number of reasons. An incident might make you doubt their values, or they may become involved in other interests. These individuals may be better suited to your secondary circle.

Your Tertiary Circle:

  • Is wide, shallow, and full of weak contacts.
  • Is often composed of exchanges involving basic information such as job openings, data, statistics, etc.
  • Usually consists of people who don’t want anything beyond an information relationship (at least at this time). They may be extremely busy and don’t have time to devote to a relationship with you, or they may lack the experience and maturity necessary for a mutually beneficial partnership.
  • In a sense, are classic networkers. They may develop someday into Networlding relationships, but for now, they are best suited to a tertiary relationship.

Your main task is to develop and deepen relationships with people you’ve assigned to your primary circle. Take the following steps:

  • Initiate contact with at least 3 people you consider prime candidates for your primary circle and who’ve determined to be influencers.
  • If the response is positive, schedule a meeting or lunch.
  • If the meeting goes well, schedule additional meetings to exchange ideas, information, feelings, and opportunities.
  • Tap into their hidden connections.
  • Continuously assess these 3 relationships to determine if they meet the criteria established for both Networlders and influencers.

Repeat the above steps whenever possible to add to your primary circle and to replace any individual who no longer belongs to that circle.
