WHY?: 1 of 101

WHY?: 1 Of 101

I decided today while I was working out on the elliptical machine in our condo workout room that I would write 101 different blog entries on the concept of WHY? What do I mean by WHY?

WHY is such a powerful and important question that we don’t ask ourselves often or enough. WHY is all about the reason for WHAT we do each day. Without a great WHY which springs forth from our hearts versus our heads, daily, we do not have the steam power (aka energy) to do the things that will lift us up from working to live versus living to work in our lives.

I am the first one to say that I need to keep asking WHY I do what I do each day just as much as anyone. But before I share my WHY I’ll share the WHY’s of some companies. I’ll start with Southwest Airlines. Every time I go on a Southwest Airlines plane I do think about their top values–fun and love. It makes me feel better about flying. I have been and still am a jittery flyer. There is no question that one flight after another on Southwest has made me passionate about them and their values, attitudes, and behaviors each time I fly. I can truly feel their WHY they do WHAT they do.

A second company would be Disney. Walt Disney once said that Disneyland was all about “happiness.” That’s a big WHY.

So, WHY do I do what I do? When I first brought Networlding out in 2000 and, with the help of a number of volunteers and the partnership of The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, we took 1000 people through our seven-step process, I looked at my WHY. I came to realize that my WHY was because I am passionate about making a difference. WHY? Because I get a kick out of seeing people go from a place of unhappiness or fear or insecurity to a place of appreciation, inspiration, and happiness. I realize that my WHY each day is because with very little effort I can make a difference in a number of peoples’ lives daily.

Stay tuned for WHY, 2 of 101 where I focus on other companies and people who have defined WHY they do what they do daily. In the meantime, if you do get a chance, check out my latest book at http://budurl.com/getnetworkingisdead. WHY is one of the leading principles in it. If you buy 10 copies and forward the receipt to me at melissa @ networlding.com, I’ll EXCHANGE (a big word in the world of Networlding) with you two coaching sessions that I know will make a difference for you.
