Unleash Your Power-of-Ten Circle in Social Networking

Unleash Your Power-of-Ten Circle In Social Networking

Remember The Tipping Point? Gladwell emphasized that no one person can have more than fifteen really connected relationships at any time. But that was PRE-Facebook and PRE-Twitter.

Now, studies are showing, at least for teens, that number is growing. But for many that number is a good place to keep your focus. Why? Because through a lot of research thought leaders in the social networking space, including myself, have found out that it may be “counter-intuitive” but if you leverage relationships with the few that help locate the many, you get the following:

  • third-party endorsement – it isn’t just you saying you are great. Someone else is and, you? You are getting the benefit of the praise or commendation from the person who knows how to promote you. Note: it would be good for your to offer return praise to someone who has taken the time to praise you.
  • the ability to focus on a few goals – I break my year up into four quarters. Right now I am looking at my final quarter and asking the question, “What do I need to do for my network and what should I request from my network this month?” This helps me realize my goals and also helps me help my partners realize their goals. This way I am not as overwhelmed as I always am working with a support team of complementors.
  • a constant, collaborative team of leaders – if you build your Power-of-Ten well, with people who are great networkers themselves, then you are not the only one giving. Your other partners will be also. In this new world where you can find great networkers who are also thought leaders (Mavens as Gladwell called them) and they are also great Connectors and Sales People (Gladwell again) then you have got a great Networld.

Think of the commercial for T-Mobile and their Fave 5. With your Power-of-Ten Circle you will be able to grow your opportunities faster as you won’t focus on just connecting from one person to the next. Instead, you will  connect and leverage opportunities that can come your way from your partners–if you pick good partners.

Yesterday I met with an expert, Rich Taylor of Zocola,  in word-of-mouth marketing. He shared that 6% of people online influence 80% of the recommendations. That’s a powerful statistic validating the concept of “The Law of the Few.” What does this mean for you and your business?
