Networking is Dead: Making Connections that Matter

Networking Is Dead: Making Connections That Matter

This April Kevin Roberts, CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi said, “Marketing is Decade,” emphasized that:

  • the role of marketing has changed.
  • the role of strategy has changed.
No longer are there going to be grand marketing plans but, rather, a series of marketing iterations as a result of many small interactions. It is now an ongoing, ever-morphing, two-way street. It’s now about:
  • conversation
  • inspiration
  • involvement

Remember the quote that goes something like,” Tell me and I might forget. Show me and I might remember. Involve me and I’ll understand.” Now, your markets want involvement. You are the maestro. Start getting people to join your orchestra of opportunity. Get them to bring their instrument of choice and start playing. Help them “co-create” something that is bigger than any one of them individually.

The “Networking is Dead” book that I am coming out within November with my colleague, Larry Mohl, (see more on Larry and his current work), is a book co-created out of our respective passion for all things involving networks and networking and time-tested knowledge from two decades of working on building effective business networks in Fortune 500 organizations. We both predicted the big change in the way people would build their networks and, early on, identified the important elements that, similar to  Kevin Roberts’ insights on marketing, would impact social networks and social media.

For example, this year on Kickstarter I contributed to three campaigns so far. Two made it. One didn’t. I invested in Seth Godin’s campaign to bring out his new book, The Icarus Deception It had 4,242 backers with $287,342 of a $40,000 goal pledged. I also helped another project that I am very excited about called Darling Magazine with 356 backers raising $19,581 with an original $15,000 goal. For this latter project, I am being interviewed for their launch issue because they were successful. This magazine is all about building self-worth for young women which connects to my passion for mentoring.

So how do you get started being the maestro? Start by recognizing your passions and follow them to where they intersect with your complementary strengths. For me this intersection has looked like this:

Passion: helping others write books
Strengths: writing, editing, marketing, coaching-teaching-mentoring and lots of book writing experience and building online communities to grow individual and organizational brands

What does your intersection of passions and strengths look like? Keep looking for it. Once you find it, continue to lead from it and never, never, never, give up.
