Love On the Highway

Love On The Highway

It’s been quite a day so far driving with my husband, Craig, going North on State Highway 301 to my sister’s home in Charleston, NC. It happened just 30 minutes ago,

Craig was gabbing away about his interview this morning on a national show out of Tampa. His book, “Dating for Life” was a big hit with the anchors who were eager to talk about his four keys to a successful date. Craig was just sharing that the female anchor kept starting the show by stating it was a “dating” show rather than a daytime show which is what she was supposed to say.

We were laughing together when we zipped by a Florida state highway patrol car. I was in a nice relaxed mood and didn’t really get nervous when the patrol car turned around and glaring red flashers whirling, raced toward our car. Darn,” I thought. “We were just starting to make a good time!”

We stopped and got ready to pay a big fine. The patrolman came up, told us, to our surprise, we had been going 13 miles over the speed limit, and promptly told Craig to hand over his license and registration. Craig had his license handy but we had a moment of panic looking for the registration. Thankfully we found it and handed it to him. Then we had that horrible wait while he went back to his patrol car to check Craig’s driving record.

After what seemed like 30 minutes he came back, Craig apologized for his speeding and said, “Is this about $100 or so?” The patrolman responded, “No it’s more like $194.”

We both gasped as he handed us a sheet of paper with $194 circled with a dark black marker, “But I’m not going to give you a ticket today.”

We both responded loudly, “Why?!”

He just shook his head.

We then both said very sincerely, “Thank you!” Then Craig added, “I promise I won’t speed again.”

With that, he turned around and walked away. We sat there for a moment in silence. Then, as I waited for Craig to move on, instead, to my surprise he jumped out of the car. Well, this turn of events made me even more nervous. Knowing my crazy friendly husband, anything was possible.

Within less than a minute Craig opened his trunk, scooped up one of his books, swiveled around, and raising the book up waived him over. Within another minute he had the patrolman chatting with him about his wife and what he might be getting her for Valentine’s Day.

Craig ended up signing his book for a very nice guy who, hopefully, as a result of this unlikely exchange, will have a little more wonderful Valentine’s Day than he might have had otherwise. Thank you, Officer Raymon!
