How Do You Define Interesting Content?

Hardcore authors – you will want to read Jon Malysiak’s Top 10 Mistakes particularly #3 and #5 – it’s great advice!

What do you do when you read something interesting? You “ooooh” and “ah”.  Maybe you even subscribe, copy and paste it and email yourself or bookmark it.

And what blogs do you read that are in your industry that you absolutely love? Why do you subscribe to it? What makes it interesting? Your thoughts probably included: “It inspires you, it’s thought-provoking, useful, or gives you function by making your life easier.” You remember it.

Now, what if you have to write it? If you lack interest in the topic you’re writing about, sooner or later it will become fluff content and your lack of motivation will shine through.  Now that we’ve got the obvious but important bit out of the way,

Answer this question: What do you write about?

To appeal to others, you have to be an independent thinker. If you have been assigned with writing dull content, perhaps adding your own opinion will make you more involved in the writing process. Tie in your own interpretation of an event, people’s behavior, how a product or brand makes you feel, and why…  It’s ok to write a reactive post don’t make a habit of saying, “she or he is wrong because…” or “I agree…”.

Finally, let me leave you with this.  What do you think when you hear “interesting content”?  You should redefine it. Why not, in addition to posts, dabble in short videos, poetry like with Something Smells in the Office for Networlding, short quips, infographics, or questions?  Have you ever heard of Evernote? No matter where you are, don’t let your newly defined interesting content run away from your mind with this app!
