Praise for Making Your Net Work

“Billy and Melissa do a masterful job combining decades of experience into succinct strategies for individuals at all levels willing to improve their networking capabilities.  Blending science and art is often difficult, however, they make the case for stronger networking and then bravely use their personal journeys as a backdrop to demonstrate real application of business networking; a refreshing approach.  These networking luminaries shared secrets into how to strategically build, grow and incorporate networking into everyday life — attributing a focus on helping others as being their true North.”

How We Met

It was around this time 15 years ago I ran a contest to locate the ten best networkers in the world. I had been gifted a rather nice-sized office at Regis, the shared-office space giant. For whatever reason, the president there at that time liked the idea of having someone helping them market their services to the growing small-business population in Chicago.

So I was set up for one year, at no cost, with an office that enabled entrepreneurs to come to my office to learn all facets of their small business. It was during that time also that there was that major downturn in the economy. There was no question. We needed revitalization.

I couldn’t just reach out and do just one thing though. I had to give it my all. I knew better than to think I’d get more than one year of free stuff. So I leveraged what I had and created what I called “The Best Networker in the World Contest.”

The Contest

LinkedIn had not yet started. Back then the big marketing edge was networking, palm-to-palm, face-to-face. I made call after call to all my connections asking them to nominate the best networker they knew. I thoroughly researched each one, adding up those that had the most recommendations and highest rating.

From there I chose the best ten and held a large event at Regus where each winner received an award that looked almost like a Golden Globe trophy or Oscar.

It was a wonderful event. Two of the winners were from out of the country, one from England, another from Canada. They each gave riveting talks. But the talk

I remember the most, the talk that still impacts me today, is the talk by Billy Dexter.
