Becoming an Authority to Write Better Books

Becoming An Authority To Write Better Books

I recently read an article created by Copyblogger called “4 Reasons Natural Authority Rocks and 4 Ways to Build It.” What hit home for me was how to actually become a “natural” authority.

The author recommends tapping into your authentic self and focusing on coming from your place of passion around the subject matter you are most skilled at sharing. I would add that this is easier said than done. For example, do you get up every morning eager to share your best insights with the world? Do you get up with insights at all? Do you have lots of insights or, like most people, have very few insights?

What I have found through the last six years of working with 100 top thought leaders whom I helped become first-time authors, is that it takes work to pull out the gems that are inside of their brains inside their heads. That’s why I often wonder about those courses that help people create books in a weekend. I find that it takes new authors about three to four weeks to start tapping into their rich reservoirs of insights and then another number of weeks to start creating their own unique style of writing that creates what is called the writer’s voice.

“3 tips to get started creating your authority”

  1. Start with research. Look for the best articles you can find on the subject you want to become an authority on and create a spreadsheet of them with links to them.
  2. Create an editorial calendar. Start by creating one month’s worth of content. This will help you prevent brain freeze where you sit waiting for inspiration with little results.
  3. Start videoing yourself. I just went to Apple last week and bought a remote to start and end videos I decided to produce on my iPhone. Even if you don’t publish your videos, watch them. Just go for two-minute slots and see what you have to say. Less is more when it comes to videos and, sooner or later, if you practice. you will find you have something you can share with others. Your authenticity really comes alive when you can move into video to connect with your readers.

Finally, no matter what you choose to do to build your authority, remember time is on your side. In other words, take the time to build your confidence and, sooner or later, you will find you have a solid foundation you can build from. Don’t wait. Start today.
