8 Types Of Writing Strategies

Have you ever been in the middle of a good book and had something happen in the narrative that just didn’t make sense? These jarring moments cause the plug to be pulled on our imagination and we’re brought back harshly to reality. It can be frustrating, confusing, and there’s a good chance you won’t finish that story.

8 writing strategies

Every type of written content needs to have a writing strategy behind it to avoid this issue. There are several types of writing strategies that can be used to keep a reader engaged. Here are some of the best ones to try using for your writing efforts today

#1. Get them hooked from the very beginning.

Working around a good opening line is an easy writing strategy to implement. Without a solid opening line, it can be difficult for a reader to get hooked into the rest of what you’ve written. It should be something that makes sense to the reader, makes them want to read more, and offers a value proposition about what to expect when they do read more.

#2. Sincerity and authenticity rule modern writing.

People are exposed to “experts” in almost every genre of writing these days. In a sense, the internet has a lot of people telling a lot of other people what they should do and how they should do it. As a writing strategy, it can be helpful to avoid this tactic. Work towards providing something that is sincere and authentic instead. Write what comes from your heart.

#3. Show your audience what you mean.

Far too many writers today settle for telling their readers what they should be experiencing. “John was angry.” An essential writing strategy is to start showing instead of telling. “John slammed the door closed with great force.” This will help the reader understand what is going on without you needing to waste words in your narrative that could be best used in a different way.

#4. There is a lot of value in an outline.

Many writers don’t use outlines even though they are part of just about every writing composition class ever offered. Outlines help you know what you want to say as a writer and when you want to say it. If you look at blog content, you’ll see this outline in subheading structures. In a novel, you’ll see it in chapter format. Does it take some time to create an outline? Sure it does. But as a writing strategy, an outline can also make sure that you have consistency throughout your narrative.

#5. Write because you want to have fun.

This writing strategy cannot be overstated in its importance. It’s easy to fall into the trap of seeking out success, money, or fame when you’re writing. That trap becomes even larger if you get to taste success or can start paying your bills with your writing skills. Ultimately you should be writing because you have fun doing so. That attitude will come into the words that the reader sees and that will help them to have fun reading what you’ve written.

#6. Pressing on the dialogue.

Using dialogue to move a story forward is a common writing strategy because it is rather effective when done correctly. Think about some of the most recent conversations you’ve had with others. How did that conversation progress? What was the outcome of the conversation? When you look at the actual structure of how you speak with someone and then incorporate that structure into the dialogue you give your characters, you’ll have a writing strategy that works consistently.

#7. Painting in visual landscapes.

If you’re writing adult fiction, then there’s a good chance you’re not including illustrations with your content. In modern writing, however, visualization must be maximized for it to be a successful experience for the reader. This means your writing strategy must include descriptions that engage the senses of the reader. Focus on sights, smells, and sounds in particular, but don’t forget about the other senses either.

#8. Focus on clarity.

You put down the book when something was out of place for a specific reason: it was confusing to you on some level. This is why the most important writing strategy of all is to be as transparent as possible. You don’t need to give away all of your key plot details in the first chapter to create an honest narrative, but you do need to know what you wish to communicate to the reader before you start writing.

These best types of writing strategies will help you create something meaningful for your readers, no matter what type of writing you prefer to do. From websites to novels and everything in-between, figure out your writing strategy before you start and you’ll be able to create the best narratives that some readers have ever seen.
